Tashkent Travel Information
Most Uzbekistan tours begin in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, as Tashkent International Airport is the country’s main gateway.
Tashkent is the biggest and one of the oldest cities in Central Asia with a history of 2200 years. Tashkent has been the capital of Uzbekistan since 1930, replacing Samarqand. You will find Tashkent a well-planned modern city with tree-studded streets and parks, wide pedestrian pathways, convenient underground passes and boulevards, including an efficient Underground transportation system that comes with beautifully decorated stations.
Due to the 7.5-Richter scale earthquake that leveled the city and displaced over 300,000 people back in 1966, Tashkent underwent massive reconstruction, turning it into a modern urban space. Today, Tashkent is the biggest modern and cosmopolitan city with many important architectural sites, government buildings, theaters and museums in Central Asia, but there still survives excellent examples of medieval architectural monuments in the old part of the city.
You will easily notice some examples of Soviet architectural styles in Tashkent and their marks can still be seen to this day. However, such styles are now being progressively renewed by those that are more contemporary or traditional Uzbek.
Top historical sightseeing places in Tashkent are mainly in the old city of Tashkent. The most famous historic sight of the city is Khazrati Imam complex. The famous market is Chorsu bazaar.
Aside from historic sites there are plenty of modern tourist attractions in Tashkent as well. Mainly in the center of Tashkent, the modern sights of the city are unique and cohesive examples of modern Uzbek architecture. In addition Tashkent is famous with its arts and culture and outdoor parks
No matter where your Uzbekistan vacation takes you, spend one or two days in Tashkent! If you prefer to discover Tashkent on your own, you can find Tashkent’s Top attractions here.
